Wireblock
Typeface design

Pratt Institute
Typography III
Fall 24

Wireblock was inspired by plywood and metal furniture and is based off the proportions of Bodoni. Bodoni is elegant, modern font. It has unbracketed, hairline serifs and strong contrast between its thick and thin strokes. Didot is a similar typeface. Vogue, Architectural Digest, Zara, and more design/fashion brands use close derivations of these fonts.

My objective was to design a font that could be used for a design platform. I set myself the limitation of staying true to many of the characteristic of Bodoni and Didot. However, I gave myself the freedom to be playful and really highlight the inspiration of plywood and metal mid century furniture in the form of each letter.

After building the 2d font, I explored the materiality that inspired me while shaping it using Adobe Illustrators 3d modeling tool.
